Arguably “the first houseplant” — nowadays nice ones are difficult to find. If you see one, grab it! Its nickname, Cast-Iron Plant, denotes its hardiness. It will go easy on you. One variety has shiny black green leaves; one has green and white striped leaves. Usually broad, the leaves can grow to be about two feet in length.
Aspidistra will grow just about anywhere, light or dark, without much care, which makes it an ideal starter house plant. It should be watered when it feels on the dry side, and fed once a month. Mist the leaves a couple times per week.
